  Typhoons always hit Taiwan during the summer and autumn seasons. When it occurs, sediment-laden outflows from the rivers are subjected to strong wave energies from the sea and can drastically change both estuarine and fluvial morphologies in eastern Taiwan. This did exactly happen to the Taimali River. When a typhoon invades, the steep-sloped river with associated less than 1 meter deep clear water in dry seasons experiences debris and mud flowing up to 5-7 meters. A methodology for predicting the possible changes around the estuaries is needed for more effective coastal management. This investigation used both numerical simulations and field measurements to study the sediment budget around the Taimali River estuary.
  The effects of coastal sediment transport, the suspended load in the river, and as changes in bathymetry were all taken into consideration. Our study shows that the coast around the estuary will be eroded when only moderate rainfall occurs during a typhoon invasion. Sediments carried out to the sea by the river were deposited around the estuary. If discharges from the river were intensified by heavy and long-lasting rains brought by a typhoon, sediment loads will be carried away from the estuary by wave-induced currents. These will then be deposited at depths of -5 to -10 m along the coast. Evolution of the morphology around the estuary results from sediments supplied by the river and the actions of waves and/or currents. A superposition of these two factors results in the total bathymetric change after a typhoon event. Simulated and measured bathymetric changes agree well both in locality and trend. We therefore conclude that the method presenting here is capable of assessing the mechanisms involved in the evolution of estuary.
