Abstract:

This presentation discusses the research journey that began with the development of analytical solutions for groundwater contaminant transport and has evolved to the application of numerical simulations for more complex subsurface environmental challenges. The early analytical models provided valuable insights into contaminant transport and played a key role in site assessments and remediation planning. More recently, numerical modeling techniques, including fully coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) simulations, have been adopted to better represent the complexity of subsurface systems. The THMC model is essential for evaluating contaminant behavior in heterogeneous environments and assessing CO₂ storage, including plume migration and leakage risks under supercritical conditions. This talk highlights the transition from analytical models to numerical simulations and emphasizes the increasing importance of advanced modeling tools in supporting environmental remediation and safe carbon storage.
