Abstract:
Watershed ecosystem services are increasingly impacted by climate change and human activities, particularly in relation to water provision and carbon sequestration. This study employs the SWAT and SWAT-Carbon (SWAT-C) models to evaluate these services in Gaoping River and Wu River Basins. Under future climate scenarios, surface runoff and evapotranspiration in the Gaoping River Basin are projected to rise, while improvements in water provision remain limited, indicating a decline in flood regulation capacity. Nutrient and sediment exports from slope agriculture and landslides further reduce water purification services. Organic carbon export is strongly linked to land use, with elevated POC and DOC fluxes observed in highly disturbed areas. The SWAT-C model effectively simulates spatial carbon dynamics in the Wu River Basin, demonstrating the influence of land use on carbon sequestration. This study underscores the need to identify ecosystem service degradation hotspots and affirms the utility of SWAT-based models for climate adaptation and watershed management.
