Title:Climate change and global risk of deadly heat

Abstract:
 
  The recent IPCC 6th Assessment Report states that: “The rise in weather and climate extremes has led to some irreversible impacts as natural and human systems are pushed beyond their ability to adapt”. In this context, I will present the results of two investigations. The first one focuses on the global percentage of land surface and population exposed to lethal heat according to different representative concentration pathways scenarios. The results indicate that ∼ 30% of the world’s population is currently exposed to climatic conditions exceeding a deadly threshold for at least 20 days per year. By 2100, this percentage is projected to increase to ∼ 48% under a scenario with drastic reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and ∼74% under a scenario of growing emissions. While cities in temperate zones will undergo episodes of intense warming during summertime, those in humid tropical and subtropical regions will experience more days with adverse climatic conditions. The second investigation examines driving factors influencing heatwave trends and interannual variability in Southern California from 1950–2020. The results show that heatwaves frequency, intensity and duration are strongly linked to urbanization, severe drought, tropical nights, humidity, ocean warming trends and changes in the California current. Actually, heatwave nighttime temperatures, combined with high humidity, have been rising at a rate of ~1°C per decade since the 1980s, increasing urban heat stress and mortality risks. In conclusion, I will discuss some mitigation strategies that could reduce anthropogenic heat production and regulate the urban energy balance.
