Abstract:

Based on the factors of meteorology and topography, it is assumed that there exist some certain patterns in spatial and temporal rainfall distribution of a watershed. A typhoon rainfall forecasting model is developed under this assumption. By integrating techniques of cluster analysis and pattern recognition, a forecasting model is established for 13 rainfall gages in the Tamsui River Basin in Northern Taiwan. In the practical use, one inputs the records of the present instant and the records 1 hour ago then the model prompts out the predicted rainfall pattern of these 13 rainfall gages in the next coming hour. This model is still reliable even if some of the rainfall gages are not working during typhoon events.
