摘要：
Phytoplankton are the primary producers in the marine food web. Through photosynthesis, they are responsible for the transfer of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the ocean and is thought to be sensitive to the forthcoming climate change. However, phytoplankton consists of a group of diverse microorganisms and each species has different requirements for growth. Therefore, the ability to evaluate the status of phytoplankton health in natural environments is thus important to understanding how phytoplankton tolerates environmental stresses and copes with interspecific competition. In this talk, I will start with a brief introduction to the importance of phytoplankton and the factors controlling phytoplankton distribution and proliferation in the ocean. Then, I will describe the recent application of molecular markers to the study of marine ecology. Finally, I will present our ongoing research project on developing a nitrogen marker in diatoms and discuss recent results obtained from field experiments in the southern East China Sea.
