摘要:

“No hunger”, ‘‘Clean water and sanitation” and ‘‘affordable and clean energy” are three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals suggested by the United Nations in 2016. Since the supply of resources including food, water and energy are inextricably entwined. it requires systematically in-depth assessment on the impacts of food, water and energy production on one another. For instance, the agricultural sector is one of the most important consumers in global fresh water use, while the thermoelectric power generation is the biggest sector for water withdrawal. Especially in the face of global climate change, water availability plays a critical role on the future of the food, water and energy nexus. The changes and variations of temperature would pose significant challenges for resilience of energy and water infrastructure. The climate and weather conditions should be critically considered in the design of food-water-energy supply systems. Compared to other counties, the available lands and spaces in Taiwan are limited, which would further constrain the production of safe food, clean water and affordable energy. In this seminar, we will discuss the challenges and opportunities for addressing the global food-water-energy-land nexus, including (i) water and energy for agriculture on limited land, (ii) advanced separation technologies, and (iii) optimization of water treatment and supply, from the perspectives of fundamental principles to practical applications. Synergistic approaches to overcoming the challenges of food, water, and energy supply in the face of global climate change should be explored and adopted at various scales with the emphasis of land availability. A number of research directions related to the enhancement of the reliability and resilience of water, energy and food supply systems should be carefully addressed.
