Knowledge of what governs the interaction between slow- and fast-slip earthquakes is essential to understanding the nature of the earthquake cycle. In southern Taiwan, four major earthquakes that occurred near the active tremor areas since 2008 provide a unique opportunity to analyze their spatiotemporal association. We found that the number of tremors was elevated near the time of the 2008 ML 5.2 Taoyuan and 2010 ML 6.4 Jiashian earthquakes, while two other ML 6.4 events (2012 Wutai and 2016 Meinong) revealed no significant correlation with increased tremor rate. Assuming a low dip-angle thrust faulting mechanism, tremors coincided with small static stress increases (< 1 kPa) in the 2008 and 2010 events. The other two major events, however, caused negative stress changes in the tremor zone. The different responses of the tremors can be explained by coseismic slip-induced static stress change. In this complex tectonic region as a boundary between continental subduction and collision, a high fluid pressure environment and structural connection between tremors and earthquakes may be needed, to facilitate their interaction.
