Abstract:
Significant spatial variation of PM exists in Asian residential community due to the complex building arrangement and various local emission sources. To study the spatial dispersion of PM and to quantitatively assess residents’ PM exposure increment within Asian communities, a micro-scale particle model GRAL is successfully applied with a fine-resolution topography dataset and optimized parameters. A typical Asian residential community in Taiwan is selected in this work to validate the model. With optimized parameter set-up, pretty good performances of PM simulation were evaluated with the results of either in-situ or mobile observation. Subsequently, the simulation was applied to evaluate the contribution of road-traffic to kerbside PM exposure increment within the community. The contribution of cars and motorcycles on kerbside PM exposure concentration were assessed during different time period and with different wind conditions. Moreover, the simulation was also applied to evaluate the residents’ PM2.5 exposure increment on different floor levels within deep street canyons. The impact of synoptic wind and canyon orientation was assessed as well. Due to similar city characteristics, this modelling approach could be applied in communities of other Asian cities.
