Abstract:

Complexity and heterogeneity of the subsurface, combined with ubiquitous scarcity of data characterizing its properties, render quantitative predictions of subsurface processes fundamentally uncertain. In the talk, types of uncertainty in environmental geological data will be introduced. We show the possible ways to reduce the uncertainty by smartly using data and properly choosing mechanism. Case studies are presented to show how data is collected by field works, produced by using natural stimulus and fused for different sources. Finally, quantitative approaches on uncertainty are introduced. Their applications to environmental geology are presented.
