Abstract:

In-situ observations conducted by OKMC/OKTV programs in the western North Pacific over the past few years have improved our understanding of the Kuroshio's mean and, particularly, time-varying state. East of Taiwan, the observational data collected by 18 ship surveys cruises, 3 ADCP moorings, and 6 pressure-sensor equipped echo sounders (PIESs) along three transects under a 3-year OKTV program (2012-2015) have quantified the synoptic variability of hydrographic and velocity structures, volume/heat/salinity transports, and water masses in the Kuroshio. The interaction between the Kuroshio and westward-propagating eddies (sea surface height anomaly systems) that impinge on the Kuroshio is analyzed using acoustic travel time data obtained from the PIESs augmented with Seaglider observations and satellite altimeter observations. This new in-situ data set might be helpful to validate numerical simulations and even improve the predictive capabilities of numerical models.
