摘要:

Light emerging from the sea surface carries the information about water constituents. This characteristic lays the foundation of ocean optics and enables us to retrieve the biooptical properties from the slight difference in the spectra of surface reflectance. Started from the late 70s, mapping the ocean color from space provided an unprecedented source of data, which was very useful for studying the dynamics of river plumes, ocean environmental monitoring, ocean disaster management, and long-term global climate variation research. A total of 14 sensors were launched and operated in the past three decades and there are ten space-borne ocean color sensors orbiting the Earth now, operated by various space agencies in the United States, Asia and Europe. Another 11 satellites with ocean-color sensors onboard are scheduled to be launched in the next three years. Observing ocean color from space is indeed an important international tool in resource management and scientific investigations. In Taiwan, however, there has been no satellite ocean color mission ever since ROCSAT-1 ceased to operate in 2005.

Started from June 2010, South Korea has been operating the first Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), which can continuously observe the region among Korea, Japan, Russia, China and Taiwan (approximately 2500 km × 2500 km), and transmit a total of eight images with 500m resolution every day. In light of our experience in ocean optics, ocean color algorithm, the techniques and the full set of bio-optical properties measurement, Korea Ocean Satellite Center (KOSC) has officially invited Dr. Liu to be the member of the GOCI Cal/Val Advisory Group, to collaborate on Cal/Val works and applications of GOCI data in the vicinity of Taiwan area. Based on this research, we are able to explore and promote the applications of high-quality and free GOCI data in Taiwan, and provide the technical services to the other users. This serves as a preparation for the Cal/Val works and applications of the future geostationary ocean color mission, such as NASA’s GEO-CAPE mission to be launched in 2022.

This presentation will report the processing and applications of GOCI data, including (1) the automatic processing system of GOCI data, (2) bio-optical products of chlorophyll, color dissolved organic matter, and total suspended sediment, (3) pathline product, (4) photosynthetic availability radiation, and (5) the web-based service. Some discussions and our research strategy for future works would be given, and hopefully, more collaboration could be initiated after this seminar.
